The Fort Worth Vaqueros dropped a fast-paced friendly match 3-0 to Santos Laguna’s U-20 squad at Martin Field on Monday.
Although the Vaqueros were unable to put a number on the scoreboard, they enjoyed close chances on two headers in the first half. Several hard shots from the top of the box in the second half also came inches from finding the back of the net.
Santos Laguna’s U-20 team won Liga MX’s U-20 division this past season, and they displayed their talents tonight. The visitors were able to pick apart the Vaqueros’ defense and earn two clean shots on net for goals. Santos added a highlight chip shot from near midfield in the first half.
Fort Worth head coach Mark Snell said that he was pleased with his squad’s efforts against a top-notch U-20 team.
“They were a very good team,” Snell said. “I think we held our own against them. We played well. We created chances.”
The Vaqueros were playing their third game in five days after losing matches on Thursday and Saturday, and Snell said fatigue was a factor.
“We had four players that played a full game in Tulsa because we were shorthanded there,” Snell said. “But they are four warriors. They pushed through it.”
The Vaqueros can relax and get rest until July 15th when they’ll take on Dallas City at Martin Field in the annual derby, the Trinity River Cup.
