Bay Area Club Replaces California United Strikers FC, Will Compete Home and
Home Series in August, with the Championship to Be Held on November 9
(New York, March 7, 2019) – The National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) today announced that Napa Valley 1839 FC will now be among the established group of 11 clubs competing in the first-ever NPSL Founders Cup competition, which begin their home and home regional contests in two sessions; the East Region starting August 10, and the West Region following the weekend of August 24.
Napa Valley 1839 FC takes the place of California United Strikers FC, who withdrew from the
competition.
“We are very excited to be chosen for the first Founders Cup,” said Napa Valley 1839 FC founder Arik Housley. “Napa Valley 1839 FC has quickly established a solid core following in Northern California and participating in this inaugural event gives us an added boost towards larger success. We were planning to enter the Founders Cup, and sometimes paths come sooner than planned, so we are very excited to jump in immediately.”
Napa Valley 1839 FC was founded in 2016, joining the NPSL’s Golden Gate Conference as an expansion team. Partners include Josh Goss, Arik Housley, Michael Hitchcock, Chris Salese, Adam Housley, and Tamera Mowry-Housley. The team is affiliated with a youth organization, Napa United, and draws its name from George C. Yount, who planted the first grapes in Wine Country in 1839. The club plays its home matches at Dodd Stadium and is coached by Rogelio Ochoa.
Napa Valley 1839 FC is having great success off the field thanks to support from local businesses like Mira Winery and the Perfect Puree Napa Valley, which are both brands with national recognition.
The East Region clubs for the Founders Cup will include Chattanooga FC, Detroit City FC, Miami FC, Miami United FC, Milwaukee Torrent, and New York Cosmos.
The West Region clubs for the Founders Cup will now include ASC San Diego, Cal FC, FC Arizona, NapaValley 1839 FC, and Oakland Roots.
The Founders Cup semifinals will be held at the home of the highest remaining seeds on November 2, with the final to be held at a TBD location on November 9.
Full team schedules will be released at joint events throughout the country, with format, player roster information, schedule, and additional details for the Founders Cup following at a later date.
