Temecula required an 76st-minute goal from Teague Anderson to secure a 2-1 win at bitter rivals Riverside Coras and stay atop of them in the National Premier Soccer League on Sunday.
It looked like Temecula might miss the chance to climb back into the playoff spots but they have not given up hope yet with FC Arizona drawing away to City of Angels.
Temecula started the match well and Teague Anderson capitalized on a defensive mix-up involving Coras defenders and goalkeeper Andres Moreno to give the Quails the early lead in the 10th minute. Temecula would have a few more good opportunities in the first half but brave defending by Coras would see the half finish 1-0.
The second have started much of the same with Temecula the stronger team and Anderson looked to score another. He was clear on goal in the 48th minute but a great save by Moreno kept Coras in the match and gave them a boost as they went down to the other end of the field and earned themselves a penalty kick. Adrian Moreno sent Temecula goalkeeper Brent Reis the wrong way to even up the score at 1-1 in the 50th minute.
The Coras goal shifted the momentum and Riverside seemed the more likely to score the go- ahead goal. Quails head coach Austin Levins subbed in Bryan Orta in the 63rd minute soon followed by Byron Rivera and Mario Cos. If it was not for a brave save by Reis in the 65th minute, Coras would have taken the lead. The save seem to make all the difference as Temecula once again looked the most likely to score and sure enough an Orta cross to Anderson for a tap-in proved to much for Coras on the night and the Quails ran out 2-1 winners.
Temecula is in fifth place, 10 points out of the third and final playoff spot but have a game in hand. Temecula faces both ASC San Diego and FC Arizona, who are the two teams above them in the standings. Next up for Temecula FC is a home match Saturday June 1st vs ASC San Diego at Chaparral High School at 6:00 pm.
