In their most critical match to date, Virginia Beach City FC outlasted Northern Virginia United in a 1-0 victory that cemented VB City FC’s place as the NPSL Mid-Atlantic Conference leader.

“We needed to come in and really give a gutsy performance,” said Virginia Beach City FC head coach Brian Hinkey. “I don’t think we played our best soccer today, but we played with a lot of guts, a lot of determination, a lot of courage and a lot of commitment.”

The two sides played each other even for the first 86 minutes until forward AJ Wadda struck in the 87th minute to give VB City FC all the advantage they needed.

Goalkeeper Christian Coulson played exceptionally well, fending off six shots from Northern Virginia United.  Coulson’s play earned him the team’s Man of the Match award. Coulson’s defense proved necessary, as VB City FC generated just two shots on goal.  Fortunately, one of them went in.

Virginia Beach City FC now holds a commanding lead in the NPSL Mid-Atlantic Conference. VB City FC is 3-0-1 on the year and has 10 points, four more than Northern Virginia United and six more than FC Baltimore and Charlottesville Alliance FC.

“This is a huge win for us,” Hinkey said. “We’re halfway through the season and we’re undefeated.  We’ve got these guys (Northern Virginia United) at home, we’ve got FC Baltimore at home, now we’ve got to do our job on the road again against Charlottesville Alliance FC and FC Frederick.  We’ve got a really good chance of winning this thing, but there’s a lot of work to be done.”
