Detroit City FC to Face Cleveland SC in Midwest Region Final
By Detroit City FC
Detroit City FC secured its place in the 2019 NPSL Midwest Region final after defeating Minneapolis City SC 2-0 on Friday night.
Detroit will face Cleveland SC in search of its second Midwest Region title on Sunday, July 21st. Kickoff from Keyworth Stadium is at 1:00 pm ET.
Le Rouge handled Minneapolis City SC in front of 4,460 at Keyworth on Friday, with Shawn Lawson tallying his thirteenth goal of the season in the 22nd minute and Max Todd converting a penalty in the 78th minute to ensure his tenth goal of the season and a victory for Detroit.
Lawson, DCFC’s all-time leading scorer, opened the scoring on Friday. It was a quick-strike, tic-tac-toe passing clinic that set up the goal – from Max Todd to Danny Deakin to Bakie Goodman, over to Lawson who tapped it in for an easy finish.
In the 78th minute, Todd drew a penalty, forcing a Minneapolis defender to play a cross in the box with his arm. Todd, a Scotland native, stepped to the spot and blasted his try past the Minneapolis goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
Goalkeeper Hunter Morse posted Detroit’s 11th shutout of the season. Le Rouge are now unbeaten in their last 13 NPSL matches.
Kickoff was delayed by an hour after Cleveland SC and Rochester Lancers fell into a weather delay and went into extra time in the first Midwest Region semifinal of the night. It took 120 minutes of play, but Cleveland emerged with a 6-4 win.
Tickets for Sunday’s final are $12 online at tickets.detcityfc.com. Tickets are $15 at the gate on matchday.
