Detroit City FC Players Awarded NPSL Members Cup Golden Ball and Golden Glove

Two Detroit City FC players, forward Yazeed Matthews (Golden Ball) and goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher (Golden Glove), received major NPSL Members Cup awards.

“The team’s on-field success throughout our winning Members Cup campaign can be attributed to Trevor James and the players he assembled, and Nate and Yazeed were instrumental pieces in that success at either end of the pitch,” Detroit City FC CEO Sean Mann said. “Nate – working full-time as a CPA – had a fantastic year in net and was a big reason why our opponents scored four goals all campaign, and Yazeed led the team in goals in his first season, three of which were game winners.  Both are completely deserving of this recognition and we are proud of their contributions to our championship run.”

Matthews earned the Golden Ball after a successful Members Cup campaign, where the South African tallied five goals and one assist in 10 games (eight starts) and 682 minutes of play.

“It’s truly an honor for me to win this award,” Matthews said. “I would like to give thanks to all my teammates, the DCFC staff, and to all our amazing fans.”

Matthews played for Coastal Carolina University from 2017-2018, where he was named to the 2018 All-Sun Belt First Team and awarded Co-Offensive Player of the Year.

Steinwascher was awarded the Golden Glove after a strong Members Cup, where the Sterling Heights, Michigan native posted six clean sheets in 10 games (10 starts) and 862 minutes of play.

“As honored as I am to be accepting this reward, it’s really a testament to the entire team for the season we had,” Steinwascher said. “We stayed organized defensively every single match, and when we won the ball back we were very good at keeping it from our opponent.”

The University of Detroit Mercy alum was named Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year and Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year in 2014.
