Needing a win to keep playoff hopes alive, Virginia Beach City FC earned a 2-1 victory over FC Frederick at Powhatan Field at Old Dominion University.
“Last weekend, I thought we were the better team in both, it just didn’t work out for us,” manager Sam Barnett said. “We played the better soccer, had the chances but just didn’t put them away. Today, we made some slight changes with injuries but we put the game away.”
Powering VB City FC were sensational goals from Jesse Miralrio and Sheriff Secka, the latter pushing VB City FC ahead in the 78th minute with a chip-in over the keeper.
“Coming into the game, we knew we had to get this win,” Secka said. “I just wanted to do anything I could to help out and the team did great by finishing off strong.”
Miralrio, returning from injury, garnered praise as well, as his shot from well outside the box found the corner at the outstretched hands of FC Frederick’s keeper.
Miralrio and Secka shared the Man of the Match award for their performances, which came at a crucial time. Not only did Virginia Beach City FC need a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, the club was missing several key contributors on Sunday. Jordi Davis, Prince Idornigie, Cesar Gervacio, Trevor Knight, and AJ Wadda all missed the game with injuries.
Paired with a productive attack was a sterling performance by CJ Coulson in goal, who made seven saves in Sunday’s win. The result clinched a season sweep for VB City FC over FC Frederick.
VB City FC needs to stay in good form. The club has three more matches on the schedule, the first of which is the home finale for the 2021 season. VB City FC will host Northern Virginia United on June 19 at 6:00 pm at Powhatan Field, the first meeting between the two clubs this season. Tickets can be purchased online at vbcityfc.com.
