0-0 Draw for Virginia Beach City FC and Alexandria Reds

By Virginia Beach City FC

Virginia Beach City FC and Alexandria Reds played to a 0-0 draw at Powhatan Field Saturday night in the two club’s first-ever meeting.  The match saw several VB City FC Academy alumni log minutes for the first team, a sign of success in the club’s commitment to youth development within its ranks.  The match was hot and cold for much of the match as there were several fouls and players cramping throughout the contest, particularly in the second half.

The match began as a back-and-forth contest as both teams were trying to feel out the opponent, going end to end and taking several shots at the keeper early and often.  In the earliest minutes, it seemed Alexandria was controlling the majority of possession but by the 20th minute Virginia Beach City FC clearly had the majority of the opportunities.  The trend would generally last throughout the first half with Virginia Beach City FC taking control of the match at home.  Most of the possession and chances were taken by the boys in blue.

However, in the second half Alexandria made their halftime adjustments and began to punch back, winning the majority of possession in the first 15 minutes.  The last 10 minutes of the match once again shifted to a back-and-forth duel as time was beginning to run out and each side was after the full three points in the standings.

The game was likely saved by Preston Bremus as a 90th minute breakaway counter attack had Alexandria in numbers rushing the Virginia Beach City FC goal.  Bremus stayed calm, stuck his foot in,  and won the ball back for his team and also Man of the Match Honors for himself.

Virginia Beach City FC returned the favor with three chances at the death of the match.  As the  aforementioned cramping set in, the second half saw the two teams observe nearly eight minutes of stoppage time which allowed Virginia Beach City FC to threaten at the death with three dangerous chances.  To no avail, the excitement of the final 20 minutes of the match ended in a draw.
