First Causeway Classico Ends in a Draw
The inaugural Causeway Classico featured plenty of end-to-end action between Sacramento Gold FC and FC Davis. However, the two I-80 rivals ended up splitting the points, drawing 1-1 Saturday at Capital Christian High School.
In a game with plenty of action but few truly great chances, Miguel Acevedo put the visitors up first before Gabe Padilla equalized for the home squad.
The stands were packed with fans of both of the local rivals in their first-ever matchup. The two teams didn’t disappoint, with back-and-forth play out of the gate. The Gold got a great chance just ten minutes in, with a quick shot out of a through ball. However, the shot sailed just wide.
Sacramento and Davis then traded possession for about a half hour, before Davis broke through in the 41st minute. Acevedo tapped in a pass from Carlos Carranza to send the visitors into the locker room up 1-0 at halftime.
That lead would last for all of six minutes of game time. Off a corner kick, Padilla was able to get to the ball and put it in the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1 in the 47th minute.
Both teams would have some chances through the rest of the game, with chances up and down the field. However, the goalkeepers were not truly tested, with both teams leaving with a point.
Sacramento will now head back to the Bay Area for a duel with East Bay FC Stompers. That match is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 28 at CSU East Bay in Hayward.
