Greenville United Defeats Northern Virginia United 4-1
By Greenville United
Greenville United earned their first win of the NPSL season against a very talented Northern Virginia United squad. The match began at 5:00 pm on Saturday, May 20th at John Paul II Catholic High School.
In the opening 10 minutes of the match, Northern Virginia United pushed the pace and displayed a composed offense versus a very strong Greenville United defense. The attack was primarily led by NVU, but Greenville United FC looked dangerous early on in the counter attack. Much of the next 20 minutes looked about the same with Greenville United slowly stringing together more passes toward the 30-minute mark.
In the 32nd minute, goalkeeper Soren Russel distributed the ball out to midfielder Abdoulie Mbye. Then Mbye played a through ball to left winger Giancarlo Dostillio down the left flank. The winger struck the ball across the net, and the goalkeeper got a hand on it but it was not enough. Greenville would take the lead at 1-0.
Greenville United continued to pick up the pace in the 43rd minute as center back Abubacarr Fofan made a break through the middle of the pitch and delivered another picture perfect through ball to Giancarlo Dostillio. Then Dostillio cut back and delivered a cross to forward Cameron Fowler. The finishing touch was Fowler’s left-footed scissor kick that was just out of the keeper’s grasp.
Greenville would not let up despite the 2-0 lead. In the 45th minute, Russel sent a goal kick across the half-field line. The pass found the head of Fowler who flicked it right in between the NVU defense and into the path of Ariel Nunez who slotted it in the borrow left corner. Greenville now led 3-0.
The second half started with an electric pace from both teams but the next 30 minutes remained goalless. In the 80th minute, winger Lazaro Hernandez made a break down the left wing and fired a shot that bounced off the keeper’s hands. The ball would find its way back into the path of Hernandez, and he put it away for the 4-0 lead.
Northern Virginia United’s Jordan McMillen scored his side’s only goal in the 90th minute.
