Reign FK Defeats Kansas City Sol 3-2

By Reign FK

Following three winless road games to the start of the 2023 summer season, Reign FK earned a win and three points in their home opener at Custer Stadium versus Kansas City Sol.

The goal scoring opened early at the ninth minute with Grant King scoring from the middle of the park; the assist would go to Fernando Saldana.  Ten minutes later, it was again Saldana finding Dwaylan McIntosh who drove it home hard and low into the side netting of the far post.  It was a 2-0 lead for the Reign in the first 20 minutes.

A few missed opportunities to put the game away early led to disorganization from the home side, and Kansas City were able to find their first goal thanks to Anthony Rangel in the 37th minute.   The first half would end with Reign leading the visitors 2-1.

Kansas City equalized with a goal from Diego Granados in the 59th minute.

A hard 15 minutes followed before Martin Martinez-Leyva knocked home the game winner in the 74th minute.  The shot went off the post and into the back of the net, coming off a string of passes and good movement out of the midfield.  The assist went to Brandon O‘Rourke.  Reign would lead 3-2.

Emotions were up, and the energy was high.  Less than three minutes later Reign FK were down to 10 men following a second yellow card from Braden McCann.

The final minutes of the game were chaotic with two goal line clearances and two massive saves from goalkeeper Cameron Molder.  Five minutes of stoppage time later, the final whistle blew and the Reign emerged with the 3-2 win..

The focus and work begina again in hopes to keep the winning streak alive on Saturday, June 3 in a rematch versus Oklahoma City 1889 FC.  The match will take place at 7:00 pm under the lights of Custer Stadium in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
