Napa Valley 1839 FC Defeats Oakland Stompers 3-0 in Postseason Action
By Napa Valley 1839 FC
Napa Valley 1839 FC kicked off their second home playoff game of the 2023 season on Saturday, July 8 when they hosted the Oakland Stompers at Justin Siena Dodd Stadium.
At the end of the season, Napa finished second in the conference behind first place El Farolito, who played FC Davis in Davis at the same time.
Over 850 fans were in attendance for the second game of the day. Earlier in the day Napa Valley 1839 FC Ladies hosted FC Davis in the last home game of their second WPSL season.
The Stompers came out strong with some early action into the game, but were unable to capitalize on those opportunities. In the 8th minute, Javier Alcarria Moreno broke free and placed the ball into the bottom corner to give Napa a 1-0 lead. That was Moreno’s first goal of the season.
In the 27th minute, a loose ball popped out to Victor Cascon, and he took a touch and placed a great shot in the upper right corner of the net for a 2-0 Napa lead.
The first half would end with the same scoreline.
You definitely couldn’t count Oakland out at this point in the match. When the Stompers came to Napa in May, Napa took a 4-0 lead into halftime but Oakland grabbed three goals back until Napa finally put the game away. Napa Valley head coach Mark Corbett knew he had to direct the team to stay focused.
The second half kicked off with a few chances for Napa Valley 1839. In the 57th minute, Ryan Kane put a beautiful strike into the goal to increase Napa’s lead to 3-0. Napa Valley 1839 continued to dominate the possession and flow of the game.
When the final whistle blew, Napa won 3-0 and will play the conference final against El Farolito. This match will be played on Saturday, June 15 and will also serve as the West Region Semifinal.
