Akron City FC Standout Dyson Clapier Returns to UA after MLS SuperDraft

Akron City FC midfielder Dyson Clapier recently announced his return to play collegiate soccer
at the University of Akron after being selected in the MLS SuperDraft.

Clapier was the 22nd pick in the second round (51st overall) of the 2024 MLS SuperDraft and
was selected by the Sporting Kansas City team on December 19, 2023.

“Getting a pick in the draft was a great opportunity for my family and I, and I’m looking forward
to starting that process next year,” Clapier says.

Starting his college career in 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic made the first season look a
bit different for Clapier.

“My time in college just didn’t feel finished,” he explained, which encouraged him to return to
the collegiate level after the SuperDraft.

Clapier has had a very successful collegiate career, playing in a total of 58 games for the
University of Akron in the last four years and appearing as a starter in 49 of those games as well,
picking up 14 goals and 12 assists.

“Dyson is a dynamic attacker,” University of Akron head coach Jared Embik said. “He has skill,
pace and power. He really excels in taking players on. He is a guy that can create a moment of
magic and win you a game. We are excited that he is coming back to help us win

Along the way Clapier has collected a multitude of accolades over the years, including Second
Team All-MAC, First-Team All-MAC, First-Team All-Ohio, and Third-Team All-American
honors. His impressive stats helped the Zips become Regular Season MAC Champions in 2022.
Clapier also won the College Spring League Golden Boot in 2022 with five goals in four

During his time at Akron, Clapier also gained more time and experience on the field with the
NPSL’s Akron City FC.

“Dyson was a pleasure to have as part of the roster at Akron City FC,” Akron City FC head
coach Andy Hoggarth said. “You could see every day the talent levels he has, and he has the
ability to go a long way in the game. I have no doubt that he will go on to be very successful in
his future.”

Akron City FC joined the NPSL in 2021 and had its first competitive season in 2022. In 2023,
Clapier became the first Akron City FC player to be drafted. It was a big moment for both
Clapier and the club.

“Getting the chance to play for these different teams and levels really has helped my career,”
Clapier says.

Clapier had the special opportunity to play for both Akron teams. He explained how full the
stadiums were and how that reflected how special and loyal the fanbase was.

“The city loves soccer,” he says, and he loved feeling supported by the same fans no matter
where he was playing.

Since 2021, 54 NPSL alums have been selected in the MLS SuperDraft. The success that
Clapier had with UA and Akron City has provided him with the opportunity to play at the next
level. Although he is postponing his professional career, Clapier will have a big year ahead of
him in contributing to the Zips’ success in the 2024 season.
