The NPSL is Coming to Chicago, Illinois

The National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), the first and only men’s league designated by
USASA as a Tier 1 national league, is proud to announce that the league will now have a team in
Chicago, Illinois. The team will begin play in the 2024 season.

“The NPSL is thrilled to have a team in Chicago,” NPSL Director of Membership Development
Dina Case said. “This organization has a special story and history that will resonate well and
extend beyond their local soccer community. A presence in the Chicago area is key to the
continued growth and development of the NPSL’s Midwest Region, and we look forward to them
having much success.”

The club will be led by President Ruben Trevino, Head of Operations Savino Leon, and Head of
Soccer Lio Velazquez.

Trevino, who currently plays in the Chicago Latin American Soccer Association, brings 10 years
of youth coaching experience to the organization. Leon is the founder of the youth club and
boasts 14 years of youth coaching experience. Velazquez, who also competes in the Chicago
Latin American Soccer Association, has experience playing with Estudiantes Tecos, Serbian
White Eagles, and Cedar Rapids Rampage in addition to six years of coaching experience with
high-level travel teams.

“The NPSL fits well with our club’s mission in providing young people with the opportunity to
play soccer at a high level,” Trevino said.

The club will honor the life of Giovanni “Gio” Leon, a seven-year-old from Chicago’s East Side.
Gio, the son of Savino Leon, was a vibrant and spirited young boy whose love for soccer and
zest for life left a lasting impact on those around him. Tragically, his promising journey was cut
short when he was struck by a vehicle while chasing a soccer ball into the street. Gio was a
proud member of the Chicago Lions Soccer Club. He embodied the spirit of camaraderie and
sportsmanship both on and off the field. His infectious smile and boundless energy brought joy to all who knew him. Gio’s legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved
him, and his spirit will continue to inspire everyone involved with the club.
