New Ownership Announced for Sioux Falls Thunder FC

The National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) is proud to announce a new ownership group for Sioux Falls Thunder FC (Sioux Falls, SD).

The new ownership group consists of Chief Financial Officer Naomi Dobson, General Manager Jon Dobson, and President Matt Dobson.

Naomi is a Certified Public Accountant with a MBA who has served on the local board of directors for Dakota Alliance Soccer Club as the treasurer and president during and after the merger of two soccer associations in Sioux Falls and helps manage one competitive team.  Her role is to manage the financial aspects of the club, find sponsor leads, and help with team communications.

Jon is an attorney and former corporate executive in the oil and gas, global manufacturing, and consumer products sectors.

Matt led sponsorship growth for Sioux Falls Thunder FC and assisted in team operations for the 2023 NPSL season.  He has a USYS D license and 11 years of club coaching experience with a local club where he also served as board member and president.  When not promoting soccer, Matt uses his master’s degree in information systems to lead a technology team for a large financial institution headquartered in Sioux Falls.

“We, as an ownership group, are super excited about the upcoming season,” Naomi Dobson said. “We’re going to be community-focused which started with hiring a coach from the Sioux Falls community.  We’re reaching out to non-profit organizations to partner with them and to get them more awareness, and we’re speaking with community businesses to help sponsor our players who are a mix of local and afar.  At the end of the day, we are looking to put a great product on and off the field.”

All three were minority interest owners of the club before acquiring full ownership in late December of 2023.

Head Coach John Hakari comes to the Sioux Falls Thunder FC while currently also serving as the head women’s soccer coach at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD.  He’s a former college player with experience coaching at the college and club levels.  He was named NJCAA D2 Region 9 Coach of the Year during the 2020-21 season.

Home matches will be played at Bob Young Field on the campus of the University of Sioux Falls.  It opened on September 1, 2007 with seating for 5,000.
