FC Arizona Falls 2-1 to Las Vegas Legends in Home Opener

FC Arizona started their 2024 season at Coyote Stadium, a part of Campo Verde High School in Gilbert, with the hope to keep their hot streak going against their rivals to the north, the Las Vegas Legends.  The match was scoreless through the first half, with much of the action being seen by the FC Arizona goalkeeper, making some great saves to keep Las Vegas off the scoreboard.

The match started to open up in the 71st minute when an unruly collision saw Las Vegas defender Haiko Hovak exit the match with a red card.  Having an extra man on the pitch turned into a goal in the 77th minute when a through ball found Jordin Figueroa who was left with only the goalkeeper to beat to give FC Arizona the 1-0 lead.

The excitement was not long-lived as an error from FC Arizona goalkeeper Adrian Thomas gave the Las Vegas Legends an open net that they easily found, leveling the score at 1-1.

Down a player, the Legends keep their head up and look towards their next opportunity, which came at the 87th minute during a throw-in.  The throw-in was strategically placed into the box and missed by both teams at the first post, but a lucky bounce set up perfectly for a scissor kick by Jimi Villasenor into the back of the FC Arizona goal to give Las Vegas the 2-1 lead.

The home team would go on to fight until the end but ultimately fell short.

“It was not the desired start, but we will learn, and we will come out stronger for our next one,” FC Arizona head coach Alejandro Aguilar said.

FC Arizona continues their season on Sunday, April 21st against newcomer and in-state rival FCAZ Tucson.  The match is set to kickoff at 8:00 pm at Coyote Stadium in Gilbert.  More information can be found at www.fcarizona.com or on all major social media platforms using the handle @fcarizonasoccer.
