FC Frederick Opens NPSL Season with Victory over DMV Elite FC

Crabbe, Hellert’s return sparks team’s 2-1 win

By FC Frederick

FC Frederick reached into its past to deliver a 2-1 victory over DMV Elite FC in its NPSL opener on Saturday at St. John’s Catholic Prep.

Seth Crabbe assisted on both goals, and Cole Hellert scored the game-winner.  Crabbe and Hellert last played for FC Frederick in 2022 when Hellert claimed NPSL All-Mid-Atlantic honors, and Crabbe was the team’s second-leading scorer.

Their impactful return on Saturday was realized right away.

Less than 75 seconds into the match, Crabbe split the defense with a pass that ended up on the feet of Kofi Amoah, who slid a shot past the DMV Elite keeper for an early 1-0 lead.  Later, in the 39th minute, Crabbe set up Hellert, who unleashed a long-range shot to extend the lead to 2-0.

FC Frederick maintained its two-goal advantage until the 85th minute when DMV Elite’s Kevin Assiga converted a penalty kick.

“This feels brilliant,” Crabbe said of the opening victory. “It was definitely scary at the end, but the boys worked hard and were able to close out the game.”

“It’s great to get off to a good start against a real good DMV Elite team,” FC Frederick coach Rob Ryerson said. “We were able to capitalize on some good goals and persevere toward the end of the match.”

DMV Elite, dominant in the Maryland Major Soccer League in 2022 and
2023, made its NPSL debut on Saturday.  Initially, the team struggled
with the higher level of competition, failing to register a shot on
goal until the second half.  By the end of the match, FC Frederick held
a 14-6 advantage in shots.

Noah Kump, making his debut in goal for FC Frederick, recorded four saves.

FC Frederick’s next match is against Alexandria Rough Diamonds at Catholic University on Friday at 7:00 pm. FC Frederick will host its next home match on May 26 against Annapolis Blues FC, also at St. John’s Catholic Prep at 7:00 pm.
