Grove United Defeats Virginia Beach City FC 4-0 in Mid-Atlantic Conference Action

Grove United forward Gerard Broussard found the net twice in a dominant win over the visiting Virginia Beach City FC.

The travelling VB City FC looked to come into the match with a sense of revenge against Grove United after falling to the Lions in their home opener 3-0 in May.  However, Grove United upped their total against VB City FC in Robins Stadium on the campus of the University of Richmond, putting four in the net.

The game started off extremely quickly as Grove United piled on the pressure immediately.  Not even a minute into the game, Virginia Beach City goalkeeper Jack Desroches was called upon to stop a chipped ball at the top of the box, but he did well to collect it.

Desroches was needed on three more separate occasions within the first 20 minutes as crosses were flying in from either side by Grove United.  The home team played diagonal long balls over the head of the outside backs of VB City, creating chances for both Arfenne Senior and Onesime Muepu.  VB City, on the other hand, played very direct balls to striker Jack Kaupas who tried to hold up the Grove United backline and play square balls forward.

The first real chance of the game was when Senior got in behind the defense and took a whirling shot towards the back post that was just deflected wide by Muepu in the 13th minute.  Just ten minutes later, Grove United’s Will Collins caught up to a through ball behind the VB City backline, but just missed wide on the breakaway.

The first half ended one sided with many chances coming from Grove United, but the score remained deadlocked at zero after 45 minutes.  After halftime, Grove United replaced Collins with Gerard Brossard who created havoc for the back line of VB City.

Brossard’s movement in the box was exceptional as he was able to get his first goal of the game off of a low driven ball across the six-yard-box for a tap in goal in the 50th minute.  His second goal was scored in similar fashion as the ball was knocked around along the outside of the box and sprayed in again to the forward who placed it past Desroches in the 56th minute.

VB City seemed to lose some momentum after the quick goals by Grove but were able to create some quality chances later in the match.  In the 74th minute, VB City’s Matthew Brown and Joel Albritton combined for a few passes before playing a ball to Ryan Mahon around the penalty spot.  The forward laid a powerful shot on the ball, but Grove United goalkeeper Will Howard came up big to keep the 2-0 lead.

Just a minute later, Grove United found themselves on a counterattack in which Muepu made his way into the box and drew a foul.  Grove United midfielder Asanda Tom took the penalty that was originally saved by Desroches, but trickled into the back of the net in the 76th minute.

David Torres, another Grove United midfielder, got in the score sheet as well after he found himself alone at the top of the box and slotted home a shot near post in the 81st minute.

Both Virginia Beach City FC and Grove United have a quick turnaround as they face Virginia Dream FC and the Alexandria Reds respectively on Sunday, June 16.  VB City hopes they can bounce back at home, and Grove United look to keep to their winning ways on the road.
