Virginia Dream FC Defeats Annapolis Blues FC 4-2

By Virginia Dream FC

In a spirited midweek match, Virginia Dream FC never trailed the Annapolis Blues to earn a much-needed three points.  Annapolis entered the match ranked #1 in the NPSL’s overall standings, while Virginia Dream FC entered the match with a 0-1-2 record.

The visiting Blues started the game controlling possession.  Things changed drastically in the 17th  minute.  Dream midfielder Andy Hernandez gained possession of the ball about 30 yards from the Blues goal, drove towards the box, and unleashed a powerful shot from 23 yards that the diving keeper could not reach.  This gave the Dream an early 1-0 lead.

In the 25th  minute Annapolis was awarded and converted a penalty kick, which tied the score at 1-1.

Ten minutes later, the Dream earned a throw-in at midfield which was taken quickly to forward Nic Biel.  Then Biel controlled the ball and flicked to a running Angel Chavez who used his speed to get past a sliding defender and calmly placed the ball between the keeper’s legs and into the back of the net.  This would give the Dream a 2-1 lead at halftime.

The second half started with the Blues pushing forward, trying to equalize but Virginia Dream goalkeeper Bill Hamid made several crucial saves to keep his team in the lead.

Annapolis went down a man after a straight red card in the 63rd  minute.  Playing with 10 men, Annapolis was able  to get an equalizer in the 73rd  minute.  Not even ten minutes later, Demetrius Sheppard-Lewis, who came into the match as a substitute, won the ball deep in the Blues territory.  He slotted a pass to Jimmy Filerman who finished the chance with a powerful left-footed strike to make the score 3-2.

In the 85th minute, substitute RJ Fuentes took advantage of a misguided pass from the Blues goalkeeper and dribbled past a defender to score.

The match would end as a 4-2 victory for Virginia Dream FC.
