Virginia Beach City FC Falls 3-0 at Home to the Alexandria Reds

Virginia Beach City FC was looking for revenge after they fell earlier in the season to the Alexandria Reds 6-1.  However, VB City was not able to achieve that as they fell 3-0 to the Reds on their home turf of Powhatan Field in Norfolk.

The game started off well for the Reds as they were able to get the ball forward, however, winger Sheriff Secka was caught offside twice in the first 10 minutes on chances that looked dangerous. The breakthrough did come soon after as the Reds won a corner kick, and the ball was knocked down to the feet of Thomas Woodings who put it in the back of the net in the 13th minute.

Again, after creating three corners, the Reds found another one in the 36th minute.  A looping ball was played into the back post off of a corner, and Kaya Ignacio put it in the back of the net over the head of VB City defender Josh Vincent.

VB City FC responded well after the second goal.  The midfield was able to control more of the possession in the late end of the first half.  VB City’s Ryan Mahon got in behind in the 40th minute after a deflected ball, but just missed wide of the net.  Then just four minutes later Riley Usher took the ball all the way down the field and his shot from the top of the box nailed off the cross bar.

VB City looked as if they had some momentum coming into the second half, but that was quickly curtailed.  The Reds took advantage of the space in between the VB City back line, and Jeffrey Aguilar found himself in behind.  Aguilar was able to slot it past goalkeeper Jack Desroches in the 46th minute.

VB City winger Christoff Kuttner was creating chances for himself many times in the game, but his most notable was in the 48th minute.  Kuttner charged inside to his dominant right foot and hammered a ball toward the front post, but was just wide of the net to answer right back for his team.  Jack Kaupas, who replaced Mahon in the 58th minute, had a chance at the top of the box with some room, but Reds defender Jacob Kiwanuka bolted in to deflect the shot in the 69th minute.  Then just seconds later, Brady Wise hammered a ball from about 25 yards out towards the top right corner, but goalkeeper Drew Hartman made a great save to keep the 3-0 lead.

For the remaining 20 minutes, neither team created many chances.  The Alexandria midfield was able to smother the VB City midfielders when the home squad did get possession.  However, the back line of Isaiah Williams, Arnold Rutkauskas, Jonathan Kidd, and Trey Pope did well to slow down the Reds from getting forward.

Desroches again stood his ground in goal for his seventh game with double-digit saves, finishing with an astonishing 13 saves.

The game finished as a 3-0 win for the Reds as they now have 17 points and sit in second place in the Mid-Atlantic Conference.

Virginia Beach City head to Maryland for their next match against Annapolis Blues FC on Saturday, June 29.  The Reds face off against DMV Elite FC in their final away game of the season on Sunday, June 30.
