Denton Diablos FC Bounces Back with 3-0 Win at Austin United FC

By Denton Diablos FC
Following their first loss of the 2024 NPSL season, Denton Diablos FC loaded up the charter bus and headed south to face Austin United FC at Round Rock Multipurpose Sports Complex.

The 7:00 pm kickoff brought sweltering temps in the mid-90s. The four-hour drive and heat advisory didn’t stop the Diablos faithful from showing up in full support with a road crowd that outnumbered the purple clad home fans.

Denton head coach Ben Clarvis made little changes to the roster who started versus Lubbock on Thursday night, and that decision would be validated in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Diablos came out buzzing and dominated play for a solid 10 minutes before Ashwin Menon’s half volley from over 35 yards out found the back of the net. Menon’s second goal of the season was an absolute banger and proved to be the difference maker as the first half came to a close.

The second half started cagey with both teams picking up deserved fouls and pushing the pace. But alas, it would again be the Diablos who struck first. This time Brian Miralrio found himself inside the six-yard box thanks to the volley pass from Eduardo Cerna. Miralrio made the most of the chance, tucking away the point-blank shot that doubled the Diablos lead.

Miralrio’s third goal of the season had barely been pulled out of the net before Cooper Tea made the finishing run straight through the heart of the defense. After a perfectly weighted through ball from David Krumov, Tea finished with a clinical strike to extend Denton’s lead to 3-0.

“The first 20 minutes of tonight was some of the best soccer we’ve played all season,” Clarvis said. “Hats off to the boys for doing the work and collecting three big points against a very good Austin United squad. We’ve got some things to clean up in training this week as we get ready for two big road trips to close out the regular season.”

With just two games remaining, the Diablos are locked in a tight race with Laredo Heat SC for the top spot on the conference.

The Diablos are back in action on Saturday, June 29 when they head west to Midland to face off against West Texas FC.
