Golbad Receives Back-to-Back NPSL National Player of the Week Awards

Academica SC forward Cody Golbad has been selected as the ninth NPSL National Player of the Week for the 2018 NPSL season.  He won the award last week as well, making him the first back-to-back winner of the 2018 season.

Golbad scored four goals in a 4-4 draw with Sonoma County Sol FC on May 12.

After graduating from Golden Valley HS, where he holds the record for most goals in a single season (26), Golbad played four seasons for the University of California-Merced, tallying 48 goals and 26 assists in 64 matches. He also received California Pacific Conference Player of the Year as well as being Merced’s first NAIA All-American.

“I am honored and blessed to win this award twice in a row,” Golbad commented. “It’s truly a reflection of the collective effort our organization has been putting in over the past six months. We are looking forward to fighting for a playoff spot in the final part of the season and hopefully gain a few more Player of the Week honors for the team.”

The Merced, CA native has been playing for Academica SC for two years and is currently leading the team in scoring with ten goals and two assists.

“We are absolutely thrilled that Cody has won this award for the second time,” Academica SC General Manager Simon Bettencourt added. “It’s a real testament to the amount of work he and his teammates put in for this club. He is always looking for goal and knows how to put himself in place for goal scoring opportunities. He’s also a pleasure to work with. Cody has one of the best attitudes on the team and it shows through his game. He lifts players around him and it’s that combination of attitude and work ethic that has allowed him to shine. We’re proud that he represents our club as we are with all of our players.”

The winner of this national honor is determined by a vote of media members from across the country.  It is awarded every week during the regular season.
