Duluth FC Secures Dramatic 1-0 Victory over Minnesota Blizzard with Stoppage Time Thriller

Duluth FC earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Minnesota Blizzard in a tense and dramatic National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) clash at Walt Hunting Stadium in Duluth, Minnesota, thanks to a stoppage-time goal that lit up the Northland night.
From the opening whistle, the Blue Greens dominated possession and kept the pressure firmly on the Blizzard’s defensive third. Though Duluth FC controlled much of the tempo throughout the first half, Minnesota Blizzard’s disciplined back line held strong, limiting the home side to few clear-cut chances. In the 24th minute it looked like Raul Cedillo got the Blue Greens on the board chipping the ball over Blizzard goalkeeper Evan Siefken. However, a late offsides flag went up and erased the would-be goal from the board, and the game carried on. Duluth got a bit more pressure on the visiting side as the first half continued, but were not able put any away. The game went to the break knotted at 0-0.
The story was much the same after the break, with Duluth continuing to push forward but struggling to break through Minnesota’s defense. Duluth subbed in Joao Magalhaes and Tobias Gerber in the 63rd minute, and their impact was felt almost immediately as Duluth FC got several opportunities in their first 10 minutes. No opportunity was larger than a penalty kick that was awarded to Duluth as Magalhaes stormed into the box and was taken down by Evan Moreno in the 66th minute. Moreno was initially given a red card, but it was rescinded and reduced to a yellow card. Magalhaes took the penalty kick but was denied by Siefken, diving low to his left to deny Magalhaes and keep the match level.
A series of yellow cards were given to each team as the game grew more intense leading into the final minutes. Duluth had several chances as regular time drew to an end, but Siefken and the Blizzard backline were able to keep it level.
As time ticked deeper into stoppage, a draw seemed inevitable. But Duluth FC had one last moment of brilliance left. Just over five minutes into stoppage time, captain Liam Pritchard delivered a pinpoint cross into the box. Luis Vergara met it with a well-placed header across the face of goal, where Teddy Miranda volleyed home the game-winner, sparking jubilation among the Duluth faithful. Less than a minute later, the final whistle sounded and the game drew to a close.
“This team showed heart,” said Duluth FC Head Coach Thomas Pazo. “We kept pushing, kept believing, and Teddy came through when it mattered most.”
Seeing the young Duluth FC fans surround Miranda following the game, Pazo joked, “A star (Miranda) was born tonight in Duluth.”
The win gives Duluth FC six points through two NPSL matches this year. Minnesota Blizzard move to 1-1. Duluth FC will take the field on Saturday at home, hosting the Iowa Demon Hawks. The Blizzard will travel to Sioux Falls Thunder FC on Saturday and finish off a road trip in Sioux City on Sunday, taking on Siouxland United FC.
