The NJ Classico Ends in a Stalemate

The NJ Classico lived up to every bit of its billing on Friday night, as Jackson Lions FC and FC Motown played out a thrilling, hard-fought 0-0 draw at Donovan Catholic High School. With an impressive crowd considering the rainy conditions — bolstered by over 200 fans from Berkeley Soccer Club — looking on, both sides battled through missed chances, physical play, and standout performances in a match that somehow ended scoreless.
Motown arrived with a stacked lineup, including a familiar face in Nestor Cabreranow anchoring Motown’s midfield as well as a very strong front three that included Kyle Galloway, a winger from Lansdowne Yonkers FC.
The match could’ve looked very different had any of the three first-half penalty opportunities been converted. Lions forward Joey Kurak won the first in just the second minute, only to hit it over the bar. Motown then missed one of their own in the 20th minute thanks to an unbelievable save from Rafa Ponce De Leon before Joel Quist had a golden chance from the spot in the 40th minute — but his effort was denied by Motown’s keeper, who turned in a stellar performance all night.
In the second half, things remained tense and tightly contested. The Lions nearly found a moment of magic in the 70th minute, when substitute Dante Perez pulled off a dazzling piece of skill — flicking the ball over his head and turning to strike a half-volley from 18 yards that flashed just wide of the far post.
Motown had little to offer in response during the second half. Their only glimpse of a breakthrough came when a ball was played through to a forward in behind, but it was hit too hard and gobbled up by Lions keeper Rafa Ponce de Leon, who bravely slid out to collect under pressure and earned a foul in the process.
The Lions saw strong performances across the pitch. Ryan Kuster was immense in the air, clearing everything that came his way. Zach Golden put in a shift in the midfield, disrupting play and controlling the tempo and earning Man of the Match honors. And veteran striker Jacob Rubinstein showed his value with composed hold-up play and clever distribution that helped link the attack.
The closest the Lions came to snatching a winner was in the dying moments, when Tommy Johnson’s lofted free kick was mishandled by the Motown keeper, sparking a goalmouth scramble that had fans holding their breath — but the ball just wouldn’t cross the line.
It was a scoreless draw, but far from a dull affair. The NJ Classico showed why it’s one of the fiercest fixtures in the league — and why both clubs remain ones to watch this season.
