Alexandria Reds Defeat DMV Elite FC 2-1

On a sunny Saturday evening, DMV Elite FC hosted the Alexandria Reds at Long Reach High School. As this match was towards the end of each team’s regular season, both teams fought for securing their spot in the NPSL playoffs. After a tough fight, DMV Elite FC ultimately fell short, losing 2-1 to the away side.
Right at the start, fans were still getting seated when a counter-attack run and cross ended with Alexandria’s Osinachi Onwudiwe making it 1-0 with a tap-in finish at the fourth minute.
In response, DMV Elite quickly looked to stop Alexandria’s momentum by pressing as a unit without the ball while coordinating composed attacks with it. As the first half went on, DMV Elite tested Alexandria’s defensive line with penetrating through-balls and a constant physical presence.
When asked how he thought the team performed overall, DMV Elite midfielder Jair Cotrina said, “The team should be proud of the relentless work ethic displayed against a tough opponent.”
Despite the heat, both teams continued to power through, with both vying for possession in a back-and-forth fight that lasted until the end of the first half.
Finally, DMV Elite found an opening when David Akinsanya took charge to jump for a header at the near post off a corner kick, successfully redirecting the ball past Alexandria’s keeper, making it 1-1 at the 62nd minute.
With the scoreboard level and the pressure of playoffs sinking in, both teams fought with an increased intensity, evidently seen with some yellow cards being shown. This intensity was channeled into its climax in the final minutes when Alexandria’s Cesar Rubio-Amaya received the ball on the turn to deliver a first-time strike that went beyond the outstretched hands of DMV Elite goalkeeper Melvin Ahoueya and into the back of the net, making it 2-1 in the 83rd minute.
Neither team was able to rediscover meaningful momentum until the referee sounded the final whistle, ending the match 2-1 in favor of the Alexandria Reds.
In a game decided by slim margins, DMV Elite delivered an unforgettable match for the fans who at least went home knowing that their Howard County team gave a brave performance despite the result.
