Erie Commodores FC Defeats Niagara 1812, 4-0, in Great Lakes Conference Play

In their home opener, Erie Commodores FC earned a 4-0 victory over Niagara 1812 at Saxon Stadium on the campus of Mercyhurst University.

Erie Commodores FC wasted no time making their intentions clear in their eagerly anticipated home opener.  From the opening whistle, the Commodores pressed high and played with intensity, kicking long to the flanks and immediately putting Niagara 1812 under pressure.  It took just three and a half minutes for that pressure to pay off.

A sharp combination from the home side saw Alvar Silva drive with purpose into the box, threading a perfectly timed ball to Alvaro Planas, who finished coolly into an open net to put the Commodores ahead.  The early goal settled any nerves in the stadium and set the tone for what was to come.  Within minutes, the hosts doubled their lead.  A build-up down the right flank saw Julian Tovar burst to the end line and cut the ball back for Santiago Giraldo, who needed just one touch to finish with confidence and make it 2-0 by the ninth minute.

The visitors’ troubles were compounded in the 20th minute when Xavier Cabada Perry received a second yellow card, leaving Niagara 1812 to play out the remainder of the match with ten men.  The Commodores took the 2-0 lead into halftime and returned from the break looking to add more.

The second half mirrored the first.  Erie’s numerical advantage was felt all over the pitch, with wave after wave of attacks and numerous chances on goal.  The third goal arrived just three minutes into the second half in emphatic fashion.  A brilliant run from Rikito Takeuchi into the box drew a foul on Tovar, who stepped up and converted the penalty without hesitation to extend the lead to 3-0.

The fourth and final goal came in the 81st minute.  Silva, who was influential throughout the entire match, drove at the Niagara defense from the left side and unleashed a powerful shot.  The keeper managed to push it away, but the rebound fell to none other than Dylan Sumner, who drove it firmly inside the net to cap off a spectacular evening for the Commodores.

With this statement performance in front of their home crowd, the Commodores have made one thing very clear to every team in the Great Lakes Conference: this squad means business in 2026.
