Cleveland SC Spoils Buffalo Stallions’ Home Opener with 2-1 Victory

Cleveland SC spoiled the Buffalo Stallions’ home opener with a 2-1 victory in Great Lakes Conference action, completing the back end of a home-and-home series between the two clubs.

The match was played in steady rain for the majority of the evening.

Buffalo opened the scoring in the 30th minute when Tyler Warmington found the back of the net in the 30th minute.  Ivan Wangue delivered a pass to Warmington on the right side of the penalty area, where he cut toward the middle and curled a shot around the keeper and inside the far post to give the Stallions a 1-0 lead.

Cleveland responded before halftime with a pair of goals to take control of the match.

Luca Piazza equalized in the 35th minute off an assist from John Hollis.  Then, with time winding down in the opening half, Gabriel Gotting scored the eventual game-winner in the 45th minute with an assist from Jack Jenkins to give Cleveland a 2-1 advantage heading into the break.

Both sides generated quality scoring opportunities throughout the second half, but the goalkeepers stood tall.  Buffalo goalkeeper Jack Petrie and Cleveland goalkeeper Colin Monroe each made key saves to keep the scoreline unchanged.

Buffalo continued to push for the equalizer late in the match, but Cleveland’s back line held firm to secure the 2-1 road victory.

Cleveland returns to action on Saturday, May 30 when it hosts Niagara 1812.

Buffalo will look for its first win of the young season on Wednesday, May 27, when the Stallions host Flower City Union.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
