World Cup Perspectives – Zak Kersey, Ambassadors FC Ohio and England
- Can you tell us about your background in soccer?
I am originally from Lincoln, England but I moved around a lot to continue my football journey, most recently up to Bradford to play for Bradford Park Avenue AFC in the National League North. I then decided to pursue a scholarship out here in the USA and did two years of junior college at Neosho County Community College in Kansas. We had a very successful program reaching the National Championship Final in my freshman year. Unfortunately I tore both my ACLs, missing a big portion of my freshman year and my full sophomore year. I was very lucky to be given the opportunity by Coach Ryan (Dean) and Bob (Dean) to play through this summer for AFC after nearly two years out, and I will be continuing my journey at Milligan University in Tennessee this fall.
- What does it mean for you to watch England in the World Cup?
It means a lot to be able to watch my country compete and do so well. It definitely makes me proud to be English and as an international living abroad here in the U.S. it is nice to feel connected to my country again by watching them play the sport I love.
- How important has Harry Kane been to the squad?
I think everyone can see how much quality he has and how he not only scores goals but facilitates build-up play. He is our captain for a reason.
- What are your thoughts on Thomas Tuchel and his approach to managing the men’s national team?
Honestly, I was fairly sceptical of his personnel choices for the squad, leaving some big names at home but as of right now I can’t complain too much it seems to be working.
- How are people in England celebrating the World Cup?
I’m not sure about everyone, but I know my friends for sure are having plenty of beers in the sun whilst they watch.
- How are you personally celebrating the World Cup?
I’ve just been enjoying watching the games. The new structure and more teams seemed a little crazy to me but it has made for a really entertaining competition so far.
- What does soccer mean to the people of England?
Football is definitely the biggest sport in England and means a lot to a massive portion of the country. Even at the lower levels of non-league, hundreds if not thousands of people come out to support their local team.
- How does the popularity and success of the Premier League help the national team and the English game as a whole?
With the worldwide popularity and attention the Premier League gets, it brings in so much money that we are able to progress the English game massively. Even down to the 6th Division, I know many teams that are paying players full-time wages, bringing in more competition and opportunities to young footballers.
