Boston City FC Falls to Brooklyn Italians
Boston City suffered the worst defeat in the club’s three-year history, going down 6-0 at home to the Brooklyn Italians, who were lethal on the counter attack.
Clement Bourret and Matthew McDonnell each scored a pair of goals, while the Lions were toothless by comparison and rarely threatened the away goal.
The hosts went behind after only eight minutes when a perfect cross from the right was met by an unstoppable close range header by Bourret that gave Colan Balkwell no chance. The forward almost doubled the lead when he had the ball in the net again, but the assistant referee’s flag ruled out the effort.
Rasmus Hansen sliced a clear effort wide after 28 minutes as Dominck Falanga produced a pinpoint cross and he was then denied by Balkwell but had already been ruled offside.
The only clear threat from the Lions, while chasing the equalizer, came as Isaac Addai chased a Leonardo Carvalho cross but keeper Michael Bernardi arrived first.
Just as the clock ticked on to 45 minutes played, Bourret whipped in a free kick that was left by defenders and forwards alike and nestled in the back of the goal for a deserved 2-0 lead. It might have been three during injury time, but McDonnell sliced a finish over the bar.
With coach Palhinha suspended, Boston City’s assistant coaches made three changes at halftime, bringing in Vitor Scariot in goal for Balkwell, Wallah Randolph into midfield and Tyler Brondyk up front.
Scariot was called into immediate action to deny Hansen, but eleven minutes after the break it was 3-0 as McDonnell converted the supply of Hansen.
The biggest cheer from the home crowd was reserved for the return from the bench of striker Yaw Addow after 57 minutes, alongside diminutive midfielder Santi Cardona, the local youngster from Everett looking composed and creative in the middle of the park.
When McDonnell slipped in his second goal and Brooklyn’s fourth after 66 minutes, Scariot went down clutching his knee. The keeper was barely mobile when Hansen was rewarded for his hard work with a goal to make it 5-0 and had to limp off, unable to continue.
Defender Jadson Leite took over between the posts and warmed the home crowd with a save to deny Anthony Herbert, but he was powerless to keep out a James Thristino finish on the end of a Thomas Suchecki cross with ten minutes remaining that ended the rout.
