Med City FC Cruises to 11-0 Victory Over Dakota Fusion FC
Med City FC has been waiting for a night this season where everything went their way and they all but got that Saturday night as a depleted Dakota Fusion FC team made the long trip from Fargo, North Dakota to Rochester, Minnesota for a late-season match-up against the Mayhem. The result was a game to remember for the Med City FC squad.
Heavy thunderstorms caused the match to be delayed by more than 90 minutes, but that didn’t stop diehard fans from sticking around for the game. And those there were not disappointed, as the Mayhem scored early and often. Their first goal came in the 13th minute, when a pass into the box by midfielder Alan Schembri Wismayer (Rochester, MN) dropped to the feet of forward Francisco Neto (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and he buried it for a 1-0 lead. Just two minutes later, Neto turned provider, slipping a pass into midfielder Niklas Roessler (Stuttgart, Germany), who turned it into the net to make it 2-0. Three more goals, including a second for Neto, an own goal, and the first of three goals by Claudio Repetto (Genova, Italy), gave the Mayhem a 5-0 halftime lead. Man of the Match Neto would end the game with two goals and three assists.
In the second half, Med City FC picked up right where they had left off, as Repetto grabbed his second goal of the game just a minute in, and his third ten minutes later completed Repetto’s hat trick. In between those two goals, defender Nicholas Itopolous (Durban, South Africa) added a goal off a header. Defender Finlay Bloodworth (King’s Lynn, England) added Med City FC’s tenth goal in the 71st minute off a fine cross from fellow defender Alvaro Adan (Madrid, Spain), and substitute forward Midhat Mujic (Rochester, MN) added one more in the 80th minute, after some nice combination play with Ignacio Garrido (Madrid, Spain) who registered the assist, for the final 11-0 margin of victory.
The Med City FC defense was outstanding again, as Nate Levy (Byron, Minnesota) posted his fifth shutout of the season and the Mayhem defense, led by Harry Holland (Sheffield, England), racked up its third shutout in four games, having given up just one goal in the last 360+ minutes.
The win, along with losses for conference opponents Duluth FC and VSLT FC, means the Mayhem still have an outside shot at grabbing the second playoff spot in the conference. That makes their game against Duluth FC in Duluth on Friday, July 6, potentially the biggest game of the season, and only a Mayhem win will keep those playoff hopes a possibility for them.
