MINNEAPOLIS CITY SC LAUNCHES U23 TEAM
Minneapolis City SC is proud to announce the formation of the Minneapolis City U23 team, which will start play in the summer of 2018.
The U23 players will take all trainings in conjunction with the full team, with the idea that standouts will be able to win their spot on the NPSL roster.
Matt VanBenschoten, who has deep coaching experience, including as an assistant coach at Bethel University with Jeremy Iwaszkowiec, will take the reins as coach for the team.
“Our goal is to help players get to the next level, and the best way to make that happen is to get the best players playing competitively with the best players day-in and day-out,” said VanBenschoten.
This is the evolution of the Development Player program that the club has had in place and the focus will be on younger players with potential to make an impact in the City team—and beyond.
“We will have more players playing more soccer, and each working hard to win a spot for the next NPSL game,” continued VanBeschoten. “It’s a professional club model, shaped to apply the positive elements of competition.”
Minneapolis City U23s will play an independent schedule of games and an official schedule will be announced in the spring.
“After speaking with college coaches and players, the level of interest was extremely high,” said Sporting Director Jon Bisswurm. “So we are excited about this structure, which meets their needs and helps get players into the club early, building a pipeline, gets them to grow as players, and helps them elevate to the next level.”
