
West Chester United Defeats Junior Lone Star FC 2-0 in Route 3 Derby
West Chester United continued its dream debut in NPSL with a 2-0 win over local rival Junior Lone Star FC. A late first half goal from Ben Maurey and a late second half goal from Gogo Kollie secured the Kildare’s Cup in the Route 3 derby. The victory follows a 3-1 win in the season opener for a 5-1 aggregate win for the cup.
Junior Lone Star took control early but West Chester adjusted by changing formation from 3-5-2 to 4-4-2. This created more stability defensively.
In the 43rd minute, West Chester’s Matt Greer found the head of fellow midfielder and Man of the Match Ben Maurey who pounded the ball low past the Junior Lone Star netminder for his third goal of the campaign and the 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Junior Lone Star pushed hard for the equalizer with subs Mitchell Torh, Sidiki Cisse and talisman Joe Joe Jappah. The changes created chances but West Chester keeper Will Smith was up to the task.
West Chester super sub Gogo Kollie provided fresh legs for the visitors and problems for the Stars backline. It was another set piece opportunity for West Chester in the 82nd minute when Kollie beat his mark on a free kick from striker Evan Vare for a 2-0 cushion.
Junior Lone Star fell to 1-3-0 on the season with a long road trip versus Greater Binghampton FC Thunder while West Chester prepares to host fellow unbeaten side New Jersey Copa FC on Saturday.
To date, West Chester has only conceded once on the season back in the opener versus Lone Star and that goal came from the spot. With the clean sheet, that streak has reached 388 minutes.
Man of the match Ben Maurey was a towering, physical force against Junior Lone Star. Maurey provided the game-winning goal and was a steady, defensive aerial force throughout the game.
