WEEKLY RECAP: SOL, GOLD ADVANCE
The Sonoma County Sol and Sacramento Gold were the first NPSL teams to advance in the playoffs this weekend. The Sol were able to advance thanks to a 2-0 win over FC Hasental Sunday behind goals from Brenton Frame and Taylor Jones. They will play Spartans Futbol Club from the Northwest Conference on Sunday, July 13 at 3 pm. The venue is Evergreen HS in Vancouver, WA.
The Sacramento Gold defeated the San Diego Flash 2-1 on Saturday. The Gold advance to play FC Force on Saturday, July 12 at 7 pm. The venue is Linfield Christian School in Temecula, CA.
The California clubs weren’t the only big winners of the weekend.
Gate City defeated the Myrtle Beach Mutiny 4-1 as the two sides split the season series. The Mutiny still have two important matchups remaining. They face the Wilmington Hammerheads of USL PRO on Monday, July 7 followed by a visit from the Upward Stars on Friday, July 11.
Fort Worth got a dominating win of their own as the Vaqueros defeated the BCS Clash 6-0. Fort Worth winger Austin Stewart led the attack with two goals. The Vaqueros return to action on July 25th with the Fort Worth Charity Shield match, which will benefit Hispano Exito.
AFC Cleveland made their case for the playoffs in a 2-1 win over the Erie Admirals. First half goals from Adam Mitchell and TJ Welch led the way for the Royals. They now face Fort Pitt Regiment on Wednesday, July 9 in a crucial matchup with massive implications for the postseason.
Lansing United and Detroit City FC both had massive wins on Sunday. United defeated the Michigan Stars 1-0, while DCFC sent the Cincinnati Saints home with a 2-0 loss. Both Detroit and Lansing remain in the playoff hunt in what some call the most hotly-contested conference in the country.
