Matt Nigro Awarded the 2018 NPSL Golden Ball

FC Motown midfielder Matt Nigro has been awarded the 2018 NPSL Golden Ball as the league’s top player. The selection was made after an online vote by teams, media members, supporters, and fans.

“For me personally it is a huge honor to receive such a prestigious award,” Nigro said. “But I think without the team it would be impossible. Week in and week out this team performed as a unit and I am just a benefit of the tremendous talent that is on this team.”

Nigro tallied seven goals and 12 assists on the season. He also had a two-goal performance in a friendly against Bethlehem Steel FC. Nigro was a key player for Motown in 2018, helping the team to a strong 9-1-0 regular season record.

“Matt’s been special to our midfield,” FC Motown head coach Sacir Hot added. “His ability to open up a defense with his long-range passing ability has helped our team score plenty of goals. Not only does he assist but he also has the capability of scoring goals. He’s been an unsung hero for us this year and deserves recognition.”

The Morganville, New Jersey native had a successful collegiate career at William Paterson University, registering 10 goals and 14 assists as part of 81 career appearances (64 starts). He received ECAC Men’s Soccer Metro Region First Team, All-NJAC First Team, and NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region Third Team honors during his time with the Pioneers.

Nigro has impressive experience at the professional level, spending time with the New York Red Bulls II, Harrisburg City Islanders, and Phoenix Rising. He is best known for his time with IF Vestri in Iceland. He collected seven goals and nine assists from 24 appearances (22 starts) with the Third Division side.
