SPARTANS FC POSTS SHUTOUT WIN OVER REAL SAN JOSE
Spartans FC came away with an impressive 4-0 win over Real San Jose on Sunday thanks to a strong attack and a stingy defense.
“It felt great to see the chemistry of our players come together at a game that had such a great atmosphere,” Spartans FC head coach Victor Garcette commented. “Real San Jose played a fantastic game and we have a lot of respect for them. Their attitudes on the field were very professional and overall it was a top quality match.”
The matchup was a good one thanks to a fast-paced style utilized by both sides. Surprisingly the match remained scoreless for the first 22 minutes.
Spartans FC striker David Hernandez, who finished 2014 tied for the league lead in goals with 13, was the first to put one in the back of the net.
Spartans midfielder Christian Martinez followed up with a goal of his own just five minutes later, giving the home side the early 2-0 lead. This was a special moment for Martinez as this was his first game back after he suffered a season-long injury on the very same field last year.
Midfielder Evans Omani added to the Spartans’ lead in the 34th minute with a sneaky flick over the RSJ goalkeeper, leaving the halftime score at 3-0.
The final goal for SFC came in the 73rd when Paraguayan striker Josemaria Portilla converted on a penalty kick.
“It was a very fast-paced game today,” SFC forward Oswin Williams added. “Real San Jose kept coming after us, but we were able to capitalize on our chances, giving us a victory.”
Spartans striker Omar Gomez led the the team with two assists while former Portland Timbers prospect Roberto Farfan added another assist.
Real San Jose put the Spartans’ defense under pressure from start to finish, but had to deal with two road games in as many days. They clearly aren’t discouraged and will be ready for their next match when they face the San Francisco Stompers on April 4th.
“Don’t let today’s disappointments overshadow tomorrow’s dreams,” Real San Jose defender concluded. “Our team is raw.”
Spartans FC will have some time off before facing the Stompers and CD Aguiluchos USA in back-to-back home matches on April 18th and 19th.
