FINAL RECAP FROM U.S. OPEN CUP QUALIFYING

Sonoma County Sol and FC Tacoma 253 both advanced to the 2015 U.S. Open Cup thanks to impressive wins over the weekend.

A stoppage time goal from Sonoma County’s Simon Wheatley pushed the Sol past CD Aguiluchos USA with a 2-1 scoreline.  Brandon Boone scored the first goal of the match in the 44th, giving the Sol an early lead.  It took 45 minutes for the visitors to equalize with a Jesus Morales strike, but that wasn’t enough thanks to the late goal from the home side.

“The last four years we have had a lot of success, but have not been able to get back into the Open Cup,” Sol midfielder Chris Daly stated. “We’re excited to be back in this year and can’t wait to represent Sonoma County and the NPSL in this fantastic tournament.”

FC Tacoma came away with a 6-1 win over the visiting San Diego Flash, giving the expansion side a spot in the prestigious tournament even before playing a league match.
